Mikumi National Park, located near the bustling city of Morogoro, is one of Tanzania’s most accessible national parks, making it a popular destination for both short and long safaris. Covering over 3,200 square kilometers, Mikumi is part of the larger Selous ecosystem, offering rich biodiversity. It is often referred to as a “mini-Serengeti” due to its vast open plains that resemble the Serengeti’s landscapes.
The park is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, and hippos, and it’s an excellent place for birdwatching, with over 400 species recorded. The Mkata River floodplain is a prime location for game viewing, where animals congregate during the dry season. Mikumi’s accessibility from Dar es Salaam makes it an ideal weekend getaway or a stopover on longer itineraries. The park offers diverse activities like game drives and walking safaris, providing an intimate wildlife experience.
